Living around a fear

A phobia shapes your choices quietly. You skip the pier because of the gulls, keep away from the cliff edge at Hengistbury Head, stay on the sand while everyone else swims, or check every corner of the bedroom before switching off the light. Your heart races, your breathing tightens and your thoughts run ahead, even though part of you knows the threat is small. That reaction was learned, often in a single moment, and the mind is just as quick to learn a calm response in its place.

Fears I work with

  • Spiders, wasps and other insects
  • Birds, including the seafront gulls
  • Dogs and other animals
  • Heights, cliff paths and balconies
  • Deep water and swimming in the sea
  • Lifts, tunnels and enclosed spaces
  • Motorway driving
  • Flying: see fear of flying hypnotherapy

If your fear is missing from this list, I work with it too. Browse the wider range on what I help with.

How I work on phobias

Phobias respond beautifully to the combination of hypnosis and NLP, because both work directly on the way your mind stores and replays the fear. In your first session I learn exactly how your phobia runs: what you see, hear and feel, and in what order.

  1. Collapsing the fear. With the NLP fast phobia technique you watch the old response from a safe distance, then rewind it at speed. The charge drains away and the memory feels flat and ordinary.
  2. Changing the internal pictures. I show you how to make the images that frighten you smaller, duller and more distant, so your body stops treating them as an alarm.
  3. Building calm in its place. In hypnosis you create a steady, confident feeling and anchor it, ready for the moment you meet the thing you used to avoid.
  4. Rehearsing the new response. You picture yourself walking along the seafront, standing on a high balcony or holding your nerve near a spider, calm and in control, until it feels natural.

When a fear began with a specific event, I add regression therapy to release the emotional imprint at its source.

Sessions and fees

Sessions are in person in Bournemouth (BH8) or online by video, and every session is with me personally. Simple phobias usually need fewer sessions than broader worries, and I recommend a plan at your free consultation. You'll leave feeling calm and clear about the next step.

Fees: £195 an hour in person or £150 online, and the 7-hour course costs £975 in person or £750 online. See fees, then read how it works and more about Tim. I've trained since 2004 and combine Advanced and Ericksonian hypnotherapy with NLP at Master Practitioner level, learned from Richard Bandler and John Grinder.

Questions

Will I have to face my fear in the session?

The work happens in your imagination, at a pace that feels comfortable. You meet the real thing afterwards, feeling prepared.

How many sessions will I need?

A single, clear phobia usually needs only a few sessions. I give you a recommendation at the free consultation once I understand your fear.

I've had this fear since childhood. Is that a problem?

Long-standing fears are some of the most rewarding to work with. I add regression where it helps, so the old root is released as well.

Do phobia sessions work online?

Yes. NLP and hypnosis translate smoothly to video, and you work from the comfort of your own home.

Can I see you alongside my GP?

Yes. Keep taking any medication as prescribed: I'm happy to work alongside your GP or medical team.
